The Science Behind the Water Mystery
L3 Learning Sheet - Week 2: Water & Health Systems In the style of Richard Feynman
What People Thought Before
Long ago, people thought: "Clear water is safe. Dirty water is dangerous."
This sounds right. Clear water looks clean. Muddy water looks bad.
But people got sick from clear water too. They didn't know why.
Question: Why does clear water sometimes make people sick?
A Doctor's Discovery :The Story of Dr. Snow
In London, many people were dying from a stomach sickness called cholera.
Doctors thought bad air was making people sick.
But Dr. Snow noticed something. People who drank from one water pump got cholera. People who used other pumps stayed healthy.
The dangerous pump water looked clear and clean!
What Dr. Snow Did:
Made a map of sick people's houses
All sick people lived near one water pump
Told government: "Remove the pump handle!"
They removed it
Cholera stopped
What He Found: Tiny germs in the water made people sick. You cannot see these germs.
This is just like your village mystery! Clear water had invisible germs.
Scientists Made Mistakes
Mistake 1: Bad Air For 200 years, doctors thought bad air caused sickness. They tried to clean air. It didn't work.
Mistake 2: Smell Test People thought: "If water smells okay, it's safe." But dangerous germs have no smell.
Mistake 3: Taste Test People thought: "If water tastes normal, it's good." But germs and bad chemicals have no taste.
Good News: Making mistakes helps us learn!
Big Discoveries
Discovery 1: Seeing Tiny Life A man built a special glass to see small things (microscope). He looked at the water and saw tiny moving things. These were bacteria!
People didn't believe him. "How can animals be so small?"
Discovery 2: Germs Make You Sick Louis Pasteur proved tiny germs cause diseases. He showed boiling water kills germs.
Discovery 3: Testing Water Scientists learned to test water for bad chemicals.
Nitrates: Chemicals from fertilizer and dirty drains. Too much makes you sick.
Your Mystery Explained Why Athletes Got Sick:
Strange Rain: Too much rain, then stop, then too much again
Open Drains: Couldn't handle heavy rain
Dirty Water Mixed: Drain water went into wells
Invisible Problem: Clear water had germs you couldn't see
The Math:
Normal water needs: Your weight × 35ml + extra for playing
Fighting germs: Need 40% more water
Rohit's mistake: Drank normal amount, but body needed extra to fight sickness
What You Did Like Scientists
You solved the mystery like famous scientists:
Saw patterns (like Dr. Snow's map)
Asked good questions (What kind of water, not just how much?)
Used math (calculated water needs)
Tested samples (sent to lab)
Didn't give up when first ideas didn't work
You are scientists too!
Questions for the Future
These mysteries are still being solved:
Why do germs make some people more sick than others?
How will weather changes affect monsoons?
How much cleaning chemical is perfect for water?
How can we know water will be bad before it happens?
Maybe you will answer these questions!
Your Story Connection
When Manthan said "It's about clean water" - he learned what took scientists 200 years to discover.
When Veer calculated extra water needs - he did math that sports doctors use.
When Chirag tested water samples - he thought like Louis Pasteur.
You think like scientists!
